'SOBO' SO-GOOD!

Updated: May 13, 2021

If you haven't heard yet of a band called "Sobo", this is probably a great time to check them out. If their name does sound familiar to you, it surely is on a positive note.

Whether you had the opportunity to attend one of their shows, or if it's on your "To-do List", we are here to tell you โ€“ Go see them! (Orโ€ฆ go see them again!)

Sobo's musical foundation is based on the pure American rock-blues. That obviously means a celebration of guitars, bass, slides, harmonicas, rhythms that sweep you off your feet and intoxicating atmosphere.

The band was founded in 1995 by Assaf Ganzman (vocals and bass) and Daniel Kriman (guitar, vocals and harmonicas) Both are creative singers who met when Daniel played at the Rock and Blues Bar in Jerusalem. Already on that evening, the two jammed for their enjoyment, realized that their musical match is successful - and the rest is history.

Ganzman and Kriman began recording and performing under the name 'Southbound Train'. Over the years, the name has been shortened to 'Sobo'

which also became

the house band of the beloved Mike's Place pub.

Sobo was also the first Israeli band to represent Israel at the IBC International Blues Competition at Memphis USA in 2004. In 2017 Sobo represented Israel in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis and went to finals, something no Israeli band ever achieve.

The band performs on prestigious stages around the world and reaps endless compliments and praises from both blues&rock lovers and general audiences alike.

This year, we were lucky to catch Sobo perform at Mike's Place Eilat, as part of the 2021 Eilat Jazz Festival. If we had not known better, we could've sworn that we stumbled upon a magical pub at Nashville, witnessing the best show in town.

It started just in time, and lasted nearly two hours.

During the show, Ganzman was no stranger to the audience, speaking to them mainly in English and sometimes in Hebrew. Armed with bad-ass sunglasses, a top hat, leather clothes, great voice and an authentic accent, he managed to get everyone into the all-American atmosphere.

Kriman had a whole thing going on! At first glance, we were sure that the man holding the guitar on stage is none other than a famous Israeli TV host Shai Stern. It could've been the facial features, hair style, or the similar body structure. It also could've been the pub's great alcohol that made us see things that way. you guys will be the judges of it! But putting questionable similarities aside, the amount of musical talent and stage charisma of Kriman made it very clear to us that this is a musician of supreme grace. Standing firmly on stage wearing sunglasses as well, armed with an harmonica, one unique guitar and slide on one finger, he was nothing short of a musical magnet - attracting the audience in his direction.

Stern & Kriman. Separated at birth or just a good-old alcohol? You'll be the judges of it (Kriman photo by Sharon Ovadia)

We had an additional musical treat in the form of the great Blues artist Dov Hammer, who arrived as a guest and captured the hearts of the audience, strengthening the show even more with wonderful vocals and his famous harmonica wizardry.

Since we are less familiar with the US rock-blues scene, we admit that we did not recognize most of the songs (some of which were covers and some were the band's original pieces), but that did not stop us from enjoying wonderful, authentic and energetic sounds. The set-list was built like a journey for to the audience to go through, until it reaches its peak.

And in that peak , almost everyone in the audience were on their feet dancing (some on the tables, too), and the energetic band members climbed down the stage (while still playing of course) and swept everyone along with them in what visually seemed like a direct flight to Memphis.

We stood there, completely fascinated by the sounds and sights.

we glanced in to the direction of the young talented drummer

Eden Bahar, who did a wonderful job holding down the rhythmic fort (sometimes while standing up!) and never missing a beat.

Eden was dripping sweat and smiling a big smile to the audience. Ganzman and Kreiman shared amusing looks and raised cheers with everyone. Dov Hammer's good-laugh resonated well in the venue, and the satisfied audience kept dancing and singing

. they will surely remember this evening for a very long time.

That is, until Sobo returns for another unforgettable show!
